Lt Colonel Richard Williams - "The Third Reich After Hitler"

Most people assume that Hitler’s Third Reich came to an abrupt end with his suicide in the Berlin bunker on 30 April 1945 but that was not to be the case because in one of his last acts as Fuhrer, Hitler named the head of the German Navy to be his official successor. So, to the universal surprise of what was left of Germany, in the closing days of the War it was Admiral Karl Doenitz who formed a new government, complete with ministers, military structure, civil servants and even a diplomatic network.

Club member Richard Williams relates the little known but fascinating story of how this transition of power progressed through the closing days of the war and then bizarrely went on to function for weeks after Hitler’s death - even beyond the end of the War.
